Mercedes Innovation: The Crumple Zone in 1952

1959 Mercedes-Benz 220 SE: first crumple zone production car in the world

It was an inventor Bela Barenyi who pioneered the idea that passengers were safer in a vehicle that was designed to easily absorb the energy from an impact and keep that energy away from the people inside the cabin.

It may be the Volvo name which is most associated with automotive safety in the consumer's mind, but it was, in fact, Mercedes-Benz which first developed the most basic tenet of passenger car safety - the so-called Crumple Zone.

Barenyi devised a system of placing the car's components in a certain configuration that kept the kinetic energy in the event of a crash away from a bubble protecting the car's occupants. Mercedes obtained a patent from Barenyi's invention way back in 1952 and the technology was first introduced into production cars in 1959 in the Mercedes-Benz 220, 220 S and 220 SE models.

For example, Barenyi arranged the steering column and other heavy components so that they would not form blocks that would heighten the impact on the cabin. The system was designed to have the car's body crumple around the cabin, absorbing the worst of the kinetic shock of impact.

The inventor/engineer Barenyi is credited with about 2,500 patents, more than half as many as the more famous inventor, Thomas Edison.

Stuttgart - Almost 60 years ago Mercedes-Benz presented what would become a common life-saving fixture on cars: the crumple zone.

On 23 January 1951, Daimler-Benz AG applied for patent number DBP 854 157, using the unadorned description of "Motor vehicles especially for the transportation of people". Concealed behind this was the invention of the deformable areas at the front and rear of a car that is still today generally referred to as "the crumple zone".

In the decades that followed, this patent revolutionised the entire automotive industry and became the decisive factor in "passive safety".

In more recent times, it has even been applied in railway locomotive and carriage design.

The ingenious mastermind of the idea was Bela Barenyi for whom the maxim of the time - "a safe car must not yield but be stable" - was completely inappropriate.

He was the first to discover that in a collision, kinetic energy must be absorbed through deformation in order for the occupants to be protected. He logically split the car body into three "boxes": a soft front section, a rigid passenger cell and a soft rear section.

The patent was granted on August 28, 1952.

On a global scale, Barenyi's safety bodywork made its debut in production cars in the first six-cylinder Mercedes-Benz 220, 220 S and 220 SE models of 1959, their most striking feature being distinctive tail fins.

Developments under the engine hood were equally revolutionary: the steering gear moved far to the rear and the auxiliary units were arranged in such a way so as not to form blocks with each other in the event of a collision, but rather to slip past one another, permitting more effective crumpling of the bodywork.

Inside this Mercedes, the most significant improvement was only to be detected after giving it a second look: for the first time ever, the interior was completely redesigned in order to reduce the injury hazard in an accident. Hard or sharp-edged controls were replaced by yielding, rounded or recessed units, combined with recessed door handles, a dashboard which yielded on impact, padded window ledges, window winders, armrests and sun visors and a steering wheel that featured a large padded boss. Under heavy impact, the rear-view mirror was released from its bracket.

In 1961, anchorage points for seat belts were fitted as standard in the "tail fin". Lap belts were available from 1957, and the first diagonal shoulder belts appeared in 1962. Round-shoulder tyres also made their debut on this car.

In October 1948, engineer and inventor Bela Barenyi signed his new employment contract with Daimler-Benz AG, where he had worked previously between 1939 and 1946. He contributed his concept for a "car of the future for the two-to-three litre class", the "Terracruiser" as he called it, which had been in development for several years.

Striking at first glance on this design was the car's body, which was split into three sections, giving it a front end, a passenger compartment and a tail. The two outer sections were strictly separated by the passenger cell which itself was flexibly mounted in a "cradle position". This mounting was to absorb vibrations as well as offer protection in the event of a collision.

One other thing: to protect the driver as effectively as possible in a lateral crash, the driver's seat, including all instruments and controls, was arranged centrally in a complex "bridge".

The Terracruiser was designed as a three-box body with outstanding aerodynamic efficiency.

Barenyi developed a huge range of trailblazing safety elements alongside the Terracruiser. These include such essentials as the safety steering column, the steering wheel impact absorber, the "disappearing windscreen wiper" and, highly important for interior safety, the protective side moulding.

His modular design principle, which he developed so early on, has become relevant only recently.

By the end of his professional career, the restless Bela Barenyi was able to call 2,500 patents his own. To grasp the scale of his relentless pioneering work, famous US inventor, Thomas Edison, has just over half as many.

Honda Commemorates 50 years of Innovation in America


Honda's fiftieth anniversary in the American market came and went yesterday, with company employees celebrating at Honda's U.S.commemorating the establishment of American Honda Motor Co., Inc., in a small Los Angeles storefront on June 11, 1959. Honda associates observed the occasion with a brief ceremony at the company’s Torrance, Calif. headquarters.


Honda operates 10 U.S. manufacturing plants with two new plants under construction, along with 14 R&D facilities and more than 12 regional sales, parts and service, and finance offices around the country. The company’s network of U.S. parts suppliers comprises 545 companies in 34 states with annual purchases exceeding $17.5 billion in 2008.


Honda has certainly come a long way from their American beginning in a small, Los Angeles storefront. The company now employs 27,000 across 36 facilities in the United States.

In 2008, the company began leasing its next-generation FCX Clarity fuel cell sedan, the industry’s most advanced zero-emissions vehicle. In March 2009, Honda introduced the 2010 Honda Insight, America’s most affordable hybrid, with plans to launch another all-new hybrid within the next several years based on the company’s sporty CR-Z hybrid concept vehicle.

Honda Commemorates 50 years of Innovation in America

Torrance, California. - Honda today marked its first 50 years in America, commemorating the establishment of American Honda Motor Co., Inc., in a small Los Angeles storefront on June 11, 1959. Honda History in America

American Honda was the first overseas subsidiary of Honda Motor Co., Ltd., established eleven years after HMC's inception as a small motorcycle manufacturer in Japan. Honda entered the U.S. market in 1959 with the step-through Honda 50 motorcycle and helped spur the dramatic growth of the U.S. motorcycle market, as it became the best-selling brand in America.

The introduction of the fuel-efficient Civic in 1973 paved the way for Honda's entry into the U.S. auto industry. As America faced the first oil crisis in 1973 and then the U.S. Clean Air Act tightened air emissions standards in 1975, Civic became both the first automobile to meet the Clean Air Act without the need for a catalytic converter and was ranked number one on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's first list of America's most fuel efficient cars (1977).

Based on its longstanding commitment to develop and build products close to the customer, Honda established research and development operations in America in 1975, and U.S. manufacturing in 1979, starting with production of motorcycles in Marysville, Ohio. Honda became the first Japanese automaker to build cars in America with the start of Accord production at the Marysville Auto Plant in November 1982. In May 2009, Honda reached the 15 million unit milestone in U.S. automobile production.

In 1986, the company expanded into the luxury automobile market with the creation of the Acura brand, the first luxury nameplate from a Japanese automaker. Acura earned a top rating in J.D. Power and Associates' Customer Satisfaction Index for four consecutive years (1986-1989).

In the 1990s, Honda introduced the U.S. automobile industry's first low-emissions vehicles, meeting challenging new emissions requirements in California while also enhancing fuel efficiency. In 1999, Honda introduced America's first mass production hybrid vehicle, the Insight, followed in 2002 by the Honda FCX, the first fuel cell vehicle certified by the U.S. government for daily use and the first to be placed in the hands of an individual consumer.

The Golden Ferrari! Pininfarina


The New Pininfarina project dubbed the "Golden Ferrari". Apparently based on the 599 GTB, the car seems to have received inspiration from the Ferrari 330 LMB featured in the short film "Toby Dammit".


He made for us the following photos of a special new Ferrari, which was not yet running. On the plate is "The Golden Ferrari" in reading, the Pininfarina logo below. The whole suggests that this is a piece of coach building is, according to insiders, a one-off. We wrote earlier that Ferrari is the coach building to new life would blow. They would also cooperate with partners such as Fioravanti (check), Zagato, Touring Superleggera, and of course Pininfarina.


The front is very similar to a 599, but towards the back forming the lines into something very different. The back is even very retro, in which the design appears almost equal to the golden Ferrari (the golden car) from the short film Toby Dammit, part of Spirits of the Dead. This Ferrari was based on a 330LMB (with 4-liter V12) and was using Fiorenzo Fantuzzi a new body. Pininfarina has apparently want to make a remake of this classic. Ferrari 250 Testarossa sets new world record for a car sold at auction

Ferrari has set a new world record for a car sold at auction with a 1957 Ferrari 250 Testarossa fetching €9 million at the weekend (17 May 2009) in an auction of Italian supercars organized by RM Auctions at Ferrari’s Maranello home in Italy.

The previous world record for a car sold at auction was just last year and was
also set by a Ferrari, when UK radio host Chris Evans paid €7 million for a
black 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California previously owned by James Coburn. Both
cars were sold at the “Ferrari Leggenda e Passione”, an annual auction of the
finest Ferrari and Maserati supercars organized by RM Auctions and held at
Ferrari’s test track, Fiorano, in Maranello.

The 1957 Ferrari 250 Testarossa, one of just 22 similar models built at
Maranello, boasts an important race history in North and South America. It
debuted in the Buenos Aires 1,000km in 1958 and came 4th overall before being
sold to a U.S. client who raced it extensively in the SCCA championship.

"It's rare to see one offered for sale, and it is a guarantee that a massive sum
of money will exchange hands when one comes on the market. Those high-end car
collectors who remain unaffected by economic woes will have the chance to part
with such funds this coming May when a 1957 Ferrari 250 TR, chassis #0714TR,
crosses the block at RM Auctions' Ferrari Leggenda E Passione sale in Maranello.

This particular example was campaigned extensively from 1958 to 1963 and is
painted in its period-correct black paint with a red nose. RM expects the 250 TR
to set a new world record for a car sold at auction, potentially exceeding the
$10.89 million dollar sale of a 1961 Ferrari California Spyder last year."

Considered one of the most alluring, competitive and iconic of all Ferrari
racing cars, the beautiful and immediately recognizable Scaglietti-designed,
'pontoon-fender' 250 TR was produced from 1957 to 1958 during which only 22 were
constructed. The Ferrari 250 TRs entered 19 international championship races
from 1958 through 1961 emerging with 10 victories and earning them legendary
status among discerning collectors, as well as the honor of being one of the
most desirable and competitive racing Ferraris ever built.

Unlike last year, this year’s top bidder was not at the auction, remaining
anonymous and bidding over the telephone while competing against three other
bidders.

Although its bids reached a level higher than last year’s record setter at
€7.25 million, a rare Ferrari 330 P4 was passed in at the event.

Thank goodness for cruise night


Talking about the auto industry nowadays is pretty depressing. Two-thirds of Detroit is now kept afloat by the taxpayer. Nobody's making any money. Politics trumps Pontiacs. Capitol Hill gasbags blather on about the small, fuel-efficient cars we all supposedly want. Cool, fun cars that look good, go fast and make loud noises don't fit the new narrative.


So it was with great pleasure and a sigh of relief that, while running a couple of errands on Friday, I came across the weekly Classic Nights Car Club cruise taking place by the Dairy Queen in Monroe, CT. As luck would have it, I'd thrown my camera in the back seat before I left the house, so out I hopped, moseying over for a look around. Thank goodness for cruise night; It's cathartic. Current events take a backseat for a few hours every Friday as visitors, young and old, simply enjoy the great old cars for what they are. At cruise night, the people are friendly, the music's retro, and brands never die. It's all good if you ask me. Have a look at the attached gallery and judge for yourselves.

Lamborghini Countach Homage: A Raw Definition of Italian Supercars


Every boy and every man of certain age (and taste....) had a poster of it hanging on his bedroom wall at some point of his life. Yes, I'm talking about the ultimate exotic supercar of the mid-to-late 1970's and 1980s, the Lamborghini Countach. If there was ever a model that epitomizes the values of Ferruccio Lamborghini's brand, then this is it. Even today, 35 years after its release, it's threatening yet indisputably erotic hard-edge styling and imposing scissor-like doors make many modern supercars look like they were penned by gangly men with turtlenecks and hair pieces.
