We're not sure what to make of this viral video that popped up on the Top Gear website.? The video appears to portray a shooting brake version of the Porsche Cayman, but we are definitely skeptical.
Top Gear seems to think this car could be either a variant of the next Cayman, a turbo model, or a special edition.? We're not so sure.? Here's why:? If you take a hard look at the rear (around the :10 in the video), you see that the extension appears to have been tacked on at the rear.? Additionally, we would be surprised to see top-quality reflective mirror tinted glass used all the way around a test mule.? Our guess is that this prolongation was either physically built with some kind of cardboard or polystyrene foam and taped into place, or some crafty video editor extraordinaire digitally built the car frame-by-frame in Photoshop. via:worldcarfans
Probably most of you, as soon as the snow hits, start searching for an empty parking lot for some drifting. The Subaru Impreza and the Mitsubishi Evo in the video seem to be doing just that, a little fun in the snow. Until the Police arrives that is. Now the real fun begins. Instead of stopping, the Subaru Impreza and the Mitsubishi Evo continue doing donuts around the Police car while the audience can't stop laughing. With Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen holding the number box office spot for two weeks, there couldn't be a better time for this ardent Autobot fan to be flogging his truck on eBay. On paper the SL Black looks promising, it features a beefy 6.0-liter bi-turbo V12 engine with an impressive 670 hp (493 kW) and 1,000 Nm of torque. During a race with the pricey Mercedes-McLaren SLR, the SL lagged behind as it couldn't keep up in the straights but made up for it in the corners.
After endlessly praising the Mercedes CLK 63 AMG Black Series, you'd expect Top Gear's Jeremy Clarkson to be completely enamored with the more powerful SL 65 AMG Black Series. You'd be wrong; in last weekend's episode, he thoroughly slammed it.
Just when you think the S L65 AMG Black Series is sounding pretty good, Clarkson decides to point out a few foibles. Despite being "mind boggling" fast with a top speed of 199 mph (320 km/h), Clarkson says the traction control "comes down like an anvil" and the only way you can realistically drive it, is slowly. Even the luxury features fail to improve things as Jezza explains the SL Black is the "most uncomfortable car in all of human history" thanks to one-piece carbon fiber seats from Mercedes' "agony" range.
He finally sums things up by saying the Black represents a decent alternative to the SLR, but it's not worth the price premium over the standard SL. More Photos
After much speculation Honda has confirmed that Mugen Euro Co. is developing a much more hardcore Civic Type-R prototype specifically for evaluation for the UK market.
It's possibly the worst kept secret on the web, but nevertheless a Mugen-tuned Type R is still a tantalising prospect. Honda claim that there are no production plans for the car but the images suggest it's almost fully signed-off, at least for a limited production run.
The car is being run on the same powertrain as the 2007 Civic MUGEN RR from Japan but will have its power and torque increased. That model had 240hp (177kW), was 10kg lighter than the standard model and was limited to only 300 units.
Mugen will liberate more power and torque from the 2-litre iVTEC engine and also focus on improving the chassis with much stiffer track-orientated suspension to work together with the limited-slip differential as fitted to the 'Championship White' Type R.
"In standard trim, the Civic Type R is a thrilling machine to drive," said Hiro Toyoda, Vice President of MUGEN EURO. "It is a fantastic base model from which we hope to develop one of the quickest point to point front-wheel-drive road cars in the country."
The new X1’s running gear is based on the 1-series compact car but its ride height is taller. The car is actually expected to use a mixture of 1-series and 3-series parts, sort of bridging the size gap between the two - not that the gap was large to begin with. BMW’s X-drive AWD system will also feature.
The latest round photos, which have surfaced on several Internet forums, reveal the vehicle's details inside and out. BMW family traits can also be found in the front and rear lights, which resemble the recently revealed 5-series GT and the 7-series sedan, respectively.
The range will kick off with two base models: the xDrive18i and the xDrive18d, and these will be followed by an xDrive20d with 177hp (130kW) that is good for a 0 - 60mph sprint time of 8.4 seconds and fuel economy of 40mpg (5.8L/100km). Also available will be an xDrive23d model with 204hp (150kW) and a 0 - 60mph sprint time of 7.3 seconds. Topping out the range will be an xDrive28i model.
The shots also confirm that BMW designers have stuck closely to the lines of the Concept X1 showcased at last year’s Paris Motor Show.
The next couple of years will be very busy for BMW as it launches a handful of new models including new versions of current top sellers and some models we’ve never seen before. The new X1 falls into the latter category and will take the carmaker into the compact SUV market currently dominated by the likes of the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V.
Production volume is expected to top the 100,000 mark and will start at a BMW plant in Leipzig by the middle of the year. The X1 will be priced higher than the 1-series, likely starting close to the $30,000 mark. Expect to see the X1 unveiled for the first time at September’s Frankfurt Motor Show with sales to follow shortly after.
The Veritas RS III will be appearing at the London Salon Prive in July, a rather fancy event that will also play host to a new Morgan Aero Super Sport, the ultra-rare Aston Martin One-77, as well as the V12 Vantage and DBS Volante. Also appearing will be the Maybach Zeppelin in all of its big-boned glory, and considering the exclusive cars on show it’s not surprising to hear that tickets to the event will come in at a heady $190.
The car is most notable for its eschewing of any driver aids, something that we expect will see several of these kinds of stories popping up as overconfident owners forget about the lack of ABS and traction control. Additionally, Vermot will be offering a more tame version with a 480hp (358kW) M3 V8 engine if you feel the V10 might be a little too much.
With the range-topping V10 in place, the car will hit 60mph from rest in just 3.2 seconds and go on to a top speed of 216mph - if you can find a section of road long enough. Priced at $375,000, the car is no cheap proposition, but its performance and exclusive run of just 50 units should see enough people willing to part with their cash for the supercar.
The striking Veritas RS III from German niche sports car company Vermot is finally set to make its world debut, which will take place this year at an exclusive supercar show held at the Hurlingham country club in the UK. For those of you that don't quite remember, the Veritas RS III is a one-seater speedster that packs a 600hp (448kW) V10 taken from an M5 and a tiny 1,070kg kerb weight.
Jaguar has released a teaser video that reveals details about the new XJ's aluminum construction.
Although the video only shows an overhead view of the upcoming luxury sedan, Jaguar has announced the new XJ will offer class-leading fuel consumption and best in class CO2 emissions.
A notable achievement considering engine options include a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 with 510 bhp and 625 Nm of torque.
According to Jaguar's vehicle line director, Mick Mohan, "...aluminum is the perfect material..." because it reduces weight while providing the strength and stiffness the XJ needs.

After a fantastic inaugural meeting in Adria, Italy, the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo series now travels to Norisring, Germany, for the second of the season’s six race weekends. A host of 570 hp Super Trofeo race cars are set to grace the street circuit on 26-28 June 2009, showcasing the world’s fastest one-make series.
Drivers will pilot the Super Trofeo, a derivative of the Gallardo LP 560-4, equipped with a V10 5.2 liter ‘Iniezione Diretta Stratificata’ engine and Lamborghini four-wheel drive system. Amongst those contending will be Germany’s Prince Albert II, the 12th Prince of Thurn und Taxis and 2007 ADAC GT Masters Vice-Champion, who will get behind-the-wheel of the Team Lamborghini VIP car.
Also set to contest is Bavarian driver Achim Winter. Despite entering into motorsport at the age of 19, Winter, who raced at the first meeting in Italy, has only recently returned to the sport, driving for Lamborghini München Team Holzer.
"The series is great fun,” said Winter. “I always dreamed of racing at Norisring; I have been several times but have never competed there. The track always attracts big crowds, which gives you so much adrenaline and motivation.”
Winter and von Thurn und Taxis will battle against drivers such as 24 Hours of Le Mans class winner Peter Kox, who achieved a podium finish at Adria with team-mate Marc A. Hayek, President and CEO of Blancpain. Endurance racing veteran Alexander Frei and former-Formula One test-driver Jonathan Cochet.
will also compete at Norisring, supporting the ever-popular touring car series, DTM.
“The Super Trofeo had an outstanding debut at Adria, and we are looking forward to a repeat performance in Germany,” said Lamborghini’s Director of Brand and Design, Manfred Fitzgerald. “The street circuit will provide a different challenge for the Super Trofeo, but the racing is set to be just as close and just as riveting.”
The new Ferrari F450 will feature a massively enhanced technical spec compared with the outgoing F430, Autocar has learned from well placed sources in Italy.
According to Autocar, Ferrari will be employing a host of technologies derived from its Formula One and GT racing divisions. These will include a 7-speed, double-clutch trans-axle transmission, a next-generation version of traction control from the Scuderia, a software program that corrects under-steer, and radiators placed just before the front wheels.
The lightweight aluminium structure of the new car will also bring gains over the F430’s rigidity. It is said to reflect Ferrari’s dream of cutting weight to improve handling and emissions, while negating the need for more power.
Ferrari may still be fine-tuning the styling on the model and is working with legendary coach-builder Pininfarina to match design with aerodynamic requirements.
Although the F450 will employ cutting-edge tech, it won’t initially adopt any of the new patents that Ferrari recently applied for, including twin-turbo, direct-injection V8 petrol engines and all-wheel-drive hybrid technologies.
The F450 will likely make its public debut at the Los Angeles auto show in December. A hybrid version may also be featured, but Ferrari is holding off on introducing its latest patented technologies on the F450, such as Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS), fearing that its customer-base is not yet ready to see eco-friendly Ferraris. via:worldcarfans

The creative types at Kia must have liked the idea, because they assembled a several dozen Kia Souls to make a video of their own. The end result is something pretty damn cool.

The ESF is based on the S 400 Hybrid. One of the ideas installed in the car is something called a Braking Bag. It is an air bag that sits within the ESF's floor and deploys when the car "decides" that a crash is imminent. By increasing friction with the road surface it helps to slow the vehicle down and also stabilises it.

2009 is a year in which Mercedes-Benz celebrates several anniversaries in the safety field: in August 1939 the safety pioneer Béla Barényi started his work in Sindelfingen. He invented for example the principle of the crumple zone, a trailblazing innovation which entered series production at Mercedes-Benz in 1959. With the help of its in-house accident research function, which was founded in 1969, Mercedes engineers in the following years have developed several groundbreaking innovations in passenger car safety. Now it is time for a look behind the scenes, and in this anniversary year, Mercedes-Benz is using the ESF 2009 research vehicle to reveal what its safety specialists are currently working on - with a time horizon that often extends well into the future.
The ESF 2009 is the first Experimental Safety Vehicle to be built by Mercedes-Benz since 1974. Like its historic predecessors, it illustrates trailblazing innovations in the field of safety and makes the progress achieved clearly visible. These amazing but by no means crazy ideas include inflatable metallic sections which give more stability to structural components within fractions of a second, as well as the so-called "Braking Bag". This airbag housed within the vehicle floor is deployed when a crash is deemed to be unavoidable, and uses a friction coating to support the vehicle against the road surface. The ESF 2009 will be premiered on 15 June 2009, at the Enhanced Safety of Vehicles (ESV) Conference in Stuttgart.
"Safety is a central element of the Mercedes-Benz brand. In this respect we have been setting the pace in the market for almost 70 years. For the benefit of our customers and for road users in general. The ESF 2009 shows that we still have plenty of ideas and the absolute will, to lead the automobile industry in this field even in future", says Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of Daimler AG and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Cars.
The ESF 2009 was developed and built completely in the test vehicle workshops in Sindelfingen. This safety research vehicle based on the Mercedes S 400 HYBRID features more than a dozen safety innovations, most of which are fully functioning in demonstration mode. "With the ESF 2009, we have chosen this particular time to clearly demonstrate the innovative strength of Daimler. Anybody examining the ESF 2009 in detail will recognise that more safety and improved energy efficiency are not necessarily a contradiction in terms. We want to make progress in both fields with new, trailblazing ideas ", says Dr. Thomas Weber, the member of the Daimler Executive Board responsible for corporate research and development at Mercedes-Benz Cars.
The following five innovations on the basis of the S 400 Hybrid are among the highlights of the ESF 2009:
* PRE-SAFE Structure:The inflatable metal structures save weight or increase the stability of structural components. When at rest, the metal section is in a folded state to save space. If its protective effect is required, a gas generator builds up an internal pressure of 10 to 20 bar within fractions of a second, causing the section to unfold for significantly more stability.
* Braking Bag:This auxiliary brake accommodated in the vehicle floor is a new type of PRE-SAFE® component. If the sensor system concludes that an impact is unavoidable, the Braking Bag is deployed shortly before the crash and stabilises the car on the road surface by means of a friction coating. The vehicle's vertical acceleration increases the friction, and helps to decelerate the vehicle before the impact occurs.
* Interactive Vehicle Communication: The ESF 2009 is able to communicate directly with other vehicles, or via relay stations. Using "ad hoc" networks and WLAN radio technology, it is e.g. able to receive and transmit warnings of bad weather or obstacles in the road.
* PRE-SAFE Pulse: This further development of PRE-SAFE® is able to reduce the forces acting on the torsos of the occupants during a lateral collision by around one third. It does this by moving them towards the centre of the vehicle by up to 50 millimetres as a precautionary measure. As an active restraint system, it uses the air chambers in the side bolsters of the seat backrests.
* Spotlight lighting function: This partial LED main beam specifically illuminates potential hazards. If the infrared camera of Night View Assist PLUSe.g. detects deer at the roadside or pedestrians on the road, these can be briefly illuminated beyond the normal area covered by the main beams, as if by a spotlight.
Mercedes-Benz is also presenting an innovative PRE-SAFE Demonstrator at the 21st ESVConference. For the first time this simulator uses a linear motor for this purpose, in order to accelerate the vehicle cabin to up to 16 km/h within a distance of four metres before the impact occurs. The linear drive system, which is similar to that used by the Transrapid train, is freely programmable and also works in the opposite direction. This enables various acceleration profiles and also a rear-end collision to be demonstrated. The special feature of this system is that the 'vehicle occupants' experience the effect of the PRE-SAFE® functions live, e.g. belt pretensioning, NECK-PRO and the inflatable side bolsters of the seats.
Mercedes-Benz is continuing a longstanding tradition with the ESF 2009: for the ESV Safety Conferences held in 1971 to 1975, the safety experts in Stuttgartbuilt more than 30 experimental vehicles and subjected them to crash tests to satisfy the visionary safety requirements of that time. This Saturday in France, Ferrari Chairman Luca di Montezemolo will be on hand to give the drivers the starting order for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Montezemolo's presence will help commemorate the 60th anniversary of the first win by a Ferrari at the French endurance classic. In 1949 Luigi Chinetti and Lord Selsdon drove a 166 MM Barchetta to overall victory. Since then Ferrari entries have taken the overall checkered flag eight other times along with numerous class wins, including last year when Risi Competizione won GT2 in an F430. The words of Chairman Montezemolo, who, on 13th June, will start the legendary race, 60 years after the first win of the Prancing Horse.
Maranello, June 6th 2009 – The 77th edition of the Le Mans 24 Hour Race is to have a high profile guest starter. At 15.00 on June 13th next, in fact, Ferrari Chairman Luca di Montezemolo will give the official start signal for the most prestigious endurance race in the motor racing world.
Mr Montezemolo was invited to Le Mans by Automobile Club de l'Ouest President Jean-Claude Plassart to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the first of Maranello's nine overall 24 Hour Race victories, which came courtesy of the 166 MM of Luigi Chinetti and Lord Selsdon in 1949.
"I am delighted to be given the opportunity to start a race that has made motor racing history and has such strong links with Ferrari. Our Scuderia has delivered some unforgettable achievements on this circuit," declared Montezemolo. "The Le Mans 24 Hour Race is synonymous with technologically-advanced sporting competition and has always been a focus of great attention on our part."
In addition to the nine overall wins clocked up between 1949 and 1965 (the latter thanks to Jochen Rindt and Masten Gregory in the 250 LM), Ferrari has also taken numerous class victories in the French race, the most recent of which was delivered in 2008 by the F430 GT of the Risi Competizione team. A total of 10 Maranello berlinettas will be lined out at the start by eight private teams on June 13th this year.
Also on hand at the circuit will be the GES Director Stefano Domenicali, a further demonstration of Maranello's continuing interest in this classic race. In his role as Chairman of the FIAT Group, Montezemolo will also be marking another special anniversary at Le Mans as it was 40 years ago, in September 1968, that the late Gianni Agnelli also started the Le Mans 24 Hour Race.
It's fair to say that Subaru has enjoyed a run of strong product in recent years, as well as an exponential credibility increase in enthusiast's eyes, essentially ever since the automaker began shipping over the Impreza WRX back in 2001. Those considerable achievements aside, it's likewise fair to say that Subaru has yet to well-and-truly crack the aesthetics portion of the modern carbuilding equation, having produced some daring (if ungainly) entries like the origina B9 Tribeca and a series of aggressive yet unpretty Impreza variants.
And while we applaud originality, we think the folks at Fuji Heavy Industries could use a consistent design force, a man (or woman) with a mission that's out in the public eye as something of a known quantity. Think: General Motors' Ed Welburn, former Mazda-turned-Tesla wunderkind Franz von Holzhausen, former BMW lightning rod Chris Bangle, etc.
All of this is not to say that the man behind the WRX STI rally car renderings shown here has the answers, but we know one thing: When passing these images around Autoblog's (virtual) offices, we all couldn't help but say something to the effect of: "Oooooh, damn that's hot!" – a phrase we can't remember associating with Subaru, much as we love driving the vehicles themselves. In any case, these images come courtesy of one Lars Martensson (apparently better known on the interwebs by his handle 'GRID)', a man who spends his days crafting 3D renderings for videogames (Rallisport Challenge 2 for xBox, Battlefield 2 for PC).

Hot on the heels of its “Maranello” video, here’s another very cool Audi promo featuring the company’s R8 model. In it, we see the supercar racing a Zivko Edge 540 on the flight deck of the aircraft carrier USS Midway in San Diego, California. Reminds us slightly of when The Stig raced his Jaguar XJS off the end of the HMS Invincible aircraft carrier. We’re guessing the R8 has better brakes…
When carmakers start tossing around terms like 'mischievous' and tapping into online markets for their cars, it's clear they're targeting a younger audience. And that's exactly what Lexus is doing with its new campaign for the 2010 IS C retractable hardtop convertible. Partnering with ABC.com, YouTube, UrbanDaddy.com and Brash Media, Lexus is making it plain that they are really going for the gusto with the younger crowd. The ads themselves depict this as well, with a 'Live a little...a lot' tagline, titles like 'Hop In', 'Running', 'Look Out' and 'Scream', high-speed driving and girls in sun dresses chasing each other.
On the other hand, the company could just be trying to inject a bit of youth into their brand image, helping baby boomers to feel more like a part of the younger generation than the NCIS-watching retirement home crowd.

Watch the new Porsche 911 GT3 RS in our new CAR spy video as it tests in Germany. Actually, come to think of it – don’t just watch, make sure you listen to the new second-gen 997 GT3 RS. And turn up the volume. Loud. The new GT3 RS has GT3 blood running through it but is a bit different. It will have a massive rear spoiler which seems to have been built of carbon fiber. Deeper side skirts and wider rear bodywork give the GT3 RS a squat fit for a very sharp track tool.
The car will lose a few kilograms and gain more speed. The GT3 facelift already kicks out a suitable 435hp (320kW) from its 3.8-litre flat six engine. In its best form the RS should be able to go from 0 - 100km/h in about 3.8 seconds.
Among all the other hot cars expected to make their debuts at the 2009 Frankfurt International Motor Show in September will be the GT3 RS facelift. It seems like a long while to wait but when it comes to all things Porsche time just seems to fly. via:World Car Fans
Late last November, Lamborghini announced a new racing series called the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo, is set to commence in May 2009, and described as the world’s fastest one-make series. In February the company revealed it had taken the cars to the race track at Adria for testing, and the results were promising, and now the Super Trofeo has hit the pavement at Monza, complete with video. The Super Trofeo will come with a reworked chassis, significantly reduced weight of only 1300kg, and power output of 570hp (419kW). The race car will also feature Lamborghini’s permanent AWD system and E-Gear six-speed robotized transmission, which means the Blancpain Super Trofeo will also be the world’s only strictly AWD race series. Other features include a reworked double wishbone suspension system, Pirelli slick racing tires, a specialist racing brake system, a full safety roll cage, a fixed rear wing are made from carbon-fiber, and an ultra-light racing seat.
Set to music but also featuring the soundtrack of the Super Trofeo's 570hp V10 engine, the video shows the car mixing it up with Porsches, Gallardos and more. It's not an extensive run-down or a lap-time-centric exercise, but it does show the one-make racer in (admittedly somewhat mild) action. Much more thorough testing has already been carried out at the test day in Adria.
Over 167mi (270km) of testing laps were logged there, proving the car was well enough sorted to complete more than full race distance. Engineers and drivers were looking forward to doing even more testing, however. “We’ve got lots of data to look at ahead of the May race weekend, and there’s even more to come from the car in terms of performance,” said official test driver Giorgio Sanna. “We’ll be testing at Barcelona next, a very different circuit with very different conditions.”
The Super Trofeo car and parts package is offered at €200,000 plus taxes and entry fees through select Lamborghini dealerships. The first race of the 2009 calendar is set for Adria in Italy on May 17, followed by Nuremburg’s Norisring in Germany on July 5, Spa in Belgium on August 2, Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya in Spain on September 20, and culminating on October 4 in Monza, Italy.
Lamborghini will build cars for a 30-strong grid, available to professional drivers, enthusiasts, and Lamborghini dealer teams. One factory car, reserved for celebrity ‘guest drivers’, will be included in the line-up at each round.
Competitors in the Swiss watchmaker-sponsored series will race Lamborghini’s new ‘Super Trofeo’ – a lightweight version of the Gallardo LP 560-4 – and events are scheduled for race tracks all over Europe.
